Prologue: A Quest for Closure
The story
picks up shortly after the events of the first John Wick. John (Keanu
Reeves) is once again drawn into violence, not by choice but by necessity.
Determined to retrieve his stolen 1969 Ford Mustang, John raids a warehouse
owned by Abram Tarasov (Peter Stormare), the brother of Viggo Tarasov and uncle
of Iosef, whom John killed in the previous film.
Abram, well
aware of John’s fearsome reputation, begrudgingly negotiates peace. After a
chaotic and explosive battle involving cars, guns, and fists, John secures his
car but not without significant damage. This prologue reinforces the essence of
John: a man who doesn’t start fights but finishes them with ruthless
efficiency.
A Fragile Peace Interrupted
Returning
home, John seeks to restore his life of solitude, burying his weapons and
memorabilia once again. However, his respite is short-lived. Santino D’Antonio
(Riccardo Scamarcio), an influential crime lord, visits John with a blood oath
marker, a binding agreement from John’s assassin days. Years earlier, Santino
had helped John accomplish the impossible task that allowed him to leave the
assassin world and marry Helen. Now, Santino demands repayment: John must
assassinate Santino's sister, Gianna D’Antonio (Claudia Gerini), to allow
Santino to take her place at the High Table, the governing council of
international crime syndicates.
John
refuses, claiming he’s out of the business. Santino, knowing refusal is not an
option, retaliates by destroying John’s house with a grenade launcher. Bereft
of his home and safety, John has no choice but to honor the marker.
A Journey to Rome: The Impossible Mission
With heavy
reluctance, John seeks guidance from Winston (Ian McShane), the manager of the
Continental Hotel in New York. Winston reminds John of the unbreakable nature
of a blood oath. Resigned to his fate, John travels to Rome, where Gianna is
attending a grand event.
In Rome,
John stays at the Continental’s sister hotel and prepares meticulously for the
task ahead. He arms himself with a tailored suit reinforced with bulletproof
fabric, custom firearms, and maps of Gianna’s heavily guarded compound. The
attention to detail in these preparations underscores John’s professionalism
and precision.
The Assassination of Gianna D’Antonio
John
infiltrates the compound during Gianna’s extravagant party. Cornering her in
her private quarters, he reveals his mission. Gianna, understanding the rules
of the High Table, accepts her fate with dignity. Instead of allowing John to
kill her outright, she slits her wrists and dies in the bathtub, choosing her
own end.
John
delivers the coup de grâce, fulfilling his obligation. However, Santino betrays
John, sending his men to kill him as a loose end. This betrayal sets off a
relentless sequence of battles as John fights his way out of the compound.
A Target on John’s Back
Santino
places a $7 million bounty on John’s head, alerting assassins worldwide. As
John returns to New York, he becomes a marked man, hunted at every corner. The
streets of New York transform into a battlefield, with John fending off waves
of skilled killers in subway stations, crowded streets, and hidden alleyways.
One of the
standout sequences is John’s encounter with Cassian (Common), Gianna’s loyal
bodyguard. Their brutal fight spills into the Continental, where they are
forced to halt due to the hotel’s strict rules. Their grudging respect for one
another adds depth to their relationship and highlights the code of conduct
governing their world.
An Unforgiving Betrayal
John
confronts Santino at a museum hosting an elaborate art installation. This
sequence is a masterclass in action choreography, with John navigating mirrored
rooms, dark corridors, and crowded exhibits to eliminate Santino’s guards. The
tension escalates when John finally corners Santino.
However,
Santino escapes to the Continental, where he seeks sanctuary. Under the rules,
John cannot kill him on the premises. Despite Winston’s warnings, John breaks
the cardinal rule and shoots Santino in the Continental’s lounge. This act
shocks the assassin community, signaling John’s complete defiance of the
system.
Excommunicado: The Consequences of Defiance
Winston
informs John that his actions have dire consequences. By killing Santino on
Continental grounds, John has broken the foundational rules of the underworld.
He is declared “excommunicado,” meaning he loses all privileges, protection,
and resources within the assassin community.
In a
chilling sequence, Winston grants John a one-hour head start before the bounty
on his life becomes active worldwide. As John walks through the streets of New
York, he realizes that everyone around him could be a potential threat. The
film ends on a suspenseful note, setting the stage for John Wick: Chapter 3
– Parabellum.
