A Deadly Countdown
The movie
begins with John Wick (Keanu Reeves) running for his life through the
rain-soaked streets of New York City. Declared excommunicado at the end
of the previous film, John now has a $14 million bounty on his head, making him
the most wanted man in the assassin underworld. He has one hour before the
contract is activated and every assassin in the world comes after him.
John uses
his limited time to visit The New York Public Library, where he retrieves a hidden
marker and a rosary. However, an assassin, eager to claim the bounty early,
attacks him. In a brutal fight, John kills his opponent using a book,
demonstrating his resourcefulness.
Seeking Help
As the
bounty goes live, assassins from all walks of life come after John. Injured and
desperate, he seeks help from a doctor affiliated with The Continental. While
the doctor cannot heal him fully without violating the rules, he provides John
with supplies to patch himself up.
John then
approaches an old ally, The Director (Anjelica Huston), who leads a secret
Russian ballet academy that doubles as an assassin training school. In exchange
for her help, John offers his rosary as a ticket. She reluctantly assists him,
arranging his passage to Casablanca.
A Journey to Casablanca
In
Casablanca, John reunites with Sofia (Halle Berry), a former assassin and
manager of The Continental in Casablanca. Their history is complicated, but
Sofia owes John a favor marked by a blood oath. He asks for her help in meeting
The Elder, a high-ranking figure in the assassin hierarchy who can nullify his
excommunicado status.
Sofia leads
John to Berrada, a powerful man with connections to The Elder. After an intense
negotiation and betrayal attempt, Sofia and John engage in a ferocious gunfight
against Berrada's men. With Sofia's help, John locates The Elder in the desert.
A Deal with The Elder
John finally
meets The Elder (Saïd Taghmaoui), who resides in a remote desert location. The
Elder agrees to forgive John's transgressions but demands a price: John must
pledge loyalty to the High Table and assassinate Winston (Ian McShane), the
manager of The Continental in New York. To prove his commitment, John severs
his wedding ring finger and offers his ring to The Elder as a symbol of fealty.
The Return to New York
Back in New
York, John approaches Winston, torn between his loyalty to his friend and the
need to honor his deal with The Elder. At the same time, an Adjudicator (Asia
Kate Dillon) from the High Table arrives to punish those who aided John,
including Winston and Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne). The Adjudicator hires
Zero (Mark Dacascos), a deadly assassin, and his students to enforce the High
Table's will.
The Battle at The Continental
Winston
refuses to step down as manager, triggering a dramatic confrontation at The
Continental. The High Table "deconsecrates" the hotel, stripping it
of its neutral ground status. This leads to an epic battle as John, Winston,
and Charon (Lance Reddick), the hotel's concierge, defend the premises against
waves of armored High Table enforcers.
The fight
scenes here are a cinematic marvel, featuring everything from firearms to
hand-to-hand combat and even an attack with antique weapons in The
Continental's museum.
The Betrayal
After
successfully repelling the attackers, Winston unexpectedly betrays John by
shooting him multiple times, sending him tumbling off the hotel's rooftop. This
act secures Winston's position with the High Table while leaving John's fate
uncertain.
The Bowery King's Return
The film
concludes with John, battered and broken, being rescued by The Bowery King.
Both men, having been wronged by the High Table, vow revenge. This sets the
stage for the next chapter in the saga, promising more action and deeper dives
into the shadowy world of assassins.
